This series has given me such joy and inspiration. It has touched on so many important issues such as sexism, racism, discrimination towards the LGBT community, etc. I was thrilled, as a Trinidadian to see the implementation of the character, Bash. His story truly represents the plight if people of colour, experiencing colonialist racism in their home country and then hate and rejection in the new country they plan to create a life in. It resonated with me to see him go through the experience of being called a savage by one woman and then to be welcomed by other more enlightened folks in Avonlea. Also, the story of Cole really stands out in my mind. And that underlying message of acceptance and love being the most important things in life, brought me to tears more than once. I really do not care if some found that it was too edgy, because to me, it was honest. Honest about all the ways in which society can be cruel and narrow minded. The honesty of it made the series ever more thoughtful and meaningful. So many beautiful lessons to be learned from this series.
