If you have concerns about this being a musical....I can tell you those concerns are valid. Let me be clear, it's not that the musical numbers are bad. In fact they all fit the scenes and are well done. The movie looks great. Some awesome tracking shots. Another great performance from Phoenix as Arthur and Joker. Are they one in the same or separate personalities? That's the question the ask and answer. The story is pretty bland, boring and not much happens in the over 2hr run time. The major problem here is no one asked for a musical. We wanted another story in the same tone and vibe as the first. Again...the music is fine but it just doesn't fit, messes up the pacing and grind things to a halt. Maybe if you didn't see the original you will enjoy this more. This one was different for me since I went in a little concerned. This is a remake of a movie that came out a couple years ago. A Danish horror movie that was very dark and didn't really need an update. I wondered what they would change for the American audience. My concerns were misplaced. The concept and basic plot was the same but it plays out in a much different way due to them changing 2 characters...the kids. In the original the kids were not much of a factor however In the sequel they play a major role. I enjoyed this one especially Macavoys performance. However the story didn't have the same impact on me that the original had due to the Hollywood ending. I preferred the darker more grounded original ending. Still a well made movie worth a watch. I'm not the target audience for this movie so my score is probably a lower due to that. However I can only judge what's on the screen lol. The premise is fine. It's the future and they have a procedure to make you pretty but you have to wait until you are 16. Until then they call you are ugly and separated from the pretty people. The flaw in that...it creates a divide and builds animosity which is what they are trying to stop with the procedure. Then the acting and writing isn't all that great. The special effects looked pretty dated. It ended on a cliffhanger but I didn't care enough about thier situation or anyone the characters to want to see another one. This is clearly for a much younger audience and fans of the book. If you don't fit those categories you might want to skip this one. A mother and her twin boys live in the woods. The world has ended...according to mom....and they have to look for supplies to sustain them. The catch is there is an evil that can strike at any time and the only protection they have is the house. So they must be connect to it at all times with a rope. So what happens when one of her sons begins to question if this evil is real? That's a pretty solid set up. It is a slow burn but they do keep you engaged. Berry is good as the over protective mom who might be crazy....or maybe not. They do enough through the first 2 acts to keep you guessing. The boys give excellent performances as well. Where this one falters is the ending. They kind of dropped the ball by giving us an answer that satisfy both theories. They should have gone one way or the other or let it up to the audience to decide. This does not pay off that slow burn time investment enough. abeth Sparkle is a fading star in Hollywood. In fact they fire her and want someone younger and hotter. She is presented with an option to take this substance and make a prettier younger version of herself. The catch is you have to switch places every 7 days. So what happens when that rule is not respected? Very original premise that answers that question. Demi Moore is excellent in this role that probably hits close to home. This is a body horror movie. There was alot more blood and gore than I expected. So if you have a weak stomach this one is not for you. It has a very long run time at 2hr 20 and that's where they messed up. They had the perfect ending at about the 1 50...1 55 mark....and then the movie went on for another 30 minutes. It was ridiculous and surreal and it didn't match the the tone of the rest of the film. That's really too bad cause they really had a great movie here. With that ending it brought it down a few notches. Still a must watch for horror fans. A deaf mute boy raised by a dude in the woods. Trained to fight/kill and get revenge on the government for killing his family. This movie is more style over substance. Hyper violent some some decent fight sequences. He hallucinates his dead sister and has a running monlouge in his head voiced by the guy from Bob's Burgers. It's cool at first but gets old since the writing isn't all that good and half of thr jokes don't land. There is a nice twist that doesn't have the impact it should. The tone was way too silly and light. The same with the final confrontation. He just felt out out play with the wieght it represented versus the light hearted nature of the film despite it's blood and violence. Too many other action movies done much better than to watch this overly long action movie with not much of a story. A step mother who is crazy religious moves in with a young pregnant couple and imposes her will on them has thr potential to be good. However they got the tone all wrong. There are 2 types of gross outs, the comedic and the horror. This was supposed to be a horror but all the stuff they did had the opposite effect. This was full of gross out bathroom stuff that was more funny than anything. Nothing really happens the entire run time. It's not scary, there are no thrills and there is nothing mysterious about this. It's straight forward with a very basic ending. I will give the woman that played the step mother some credit. She really threw herself into that role. This felt more like a parody of a horror movie. It was just too silly to be taken seriously. Skip this one. There are a few things this movie gets right. They focused on the doomed romance more to make you more invested in the outcome. While Brandon Lee was a martial artist, Skarsgard is not. So they made him more of an unstoppable tank like character with a one track mind to get revenge and save his true loves soul. There was some really good violence and gore in the o e long action sequence. However they did t have much chemistry to pull off the romance. It's way too long and gets a little boring at times. They do a poor job of making the villian threatening or physically imposing which makes the final confrontation very disappointing. Ultimately they don't do enough to justify this remake. A family moves into a home and strange things occur and the children start displaying strange behavior. The mother and grandmother have a strained relationship and different ways on how to handle it. Starts out like a typical sad hood movie but turns into a full on horror in the 3rd act. It's well made with some good performances...until they get to the horror portion. Lee Daniel's doesn't have any experience with horror and it showed. All the stereotypical things you expect in an exorcism type move. Body contortionist, wall climbing, saying messed up stuff and bad make up round things out. Thr real twist here...it based on true events. I knkw they said this stuff happened but none of it is done in any kind of believeable way. The kids were not very good at playing possessed and thr ending felt rushed. Another AI gone crazy movie that doesn't do anything to make it original. Family gets to beta test an AI for the father's job. He is in marketing and needs to see how it works so they can build a campaign to sell it. Doesn't take long for the AI to invade every aspect of thier life and take over. Outside of a few jump scares there is nothing scary about this. It has a very low body count. No blood or gore to speak of. I understand it's PG-13 but they didn't do anything outside of a few bad words to earn that rating. They don't explain the AI at all. They just make some vague statements which is frustrating because it's not interesting enough for me to spend any time thinking about it. And then it just ends in an ambiguous that's meant to make you wonder but you don't really care. Skip this one.
