Disclaimer: I have only seen the first two episodes and I am part native Hawaiian, so potential bias.
This show is AWESOME!
Chief of War is a historical fiction from Hawaii's past. Set during a time of upheaval, as European explorers recently discovered the islands themselves and this contact leaves a mark on native society. It's a visually stunning view of the islands and its colorful people living under the brutal kapu system. From its extensive use of the native Hawaiian language to it action packed, and disturbingly violent, battle scenes, this limited series has great potential to showcase Hawaii's past. Its main protagonist is Chief Ka'iana played by Jason Momoa. Ka'iana is a true character from the islands history. He was written about in many European explores journals from that time. According to these journals, he was well liked, brave, carried himself with nobility and considered handsome. One of the few kanaka maoli (native person) from the times to visit other countries like China. Beyond the fake luau's and maitais, view visitors know Hawaii's ancient fueldal history, with royal courts scheming war and brutal betrayals.
I love the fact that many of our Polynesian brothers and sisters have come to help make this show a reality. Some famous actors like Temura Morrison (Boba Fett), Cliff Curtis (Fast and Furious: Hobbs & Shaw), Te Kohe Tuhaka ( The Dead Lands). Anyway, if you have a fondness for Hawaii or perhaps plan to visit someday, please support by subscribing to apple tv and watch the show. I hope you will like it too. Aloha!
