ok So this is an Emerich film, you bought you greats Like StarGate, Day After Tomorrow , which now resembles Fact in many parts of the world today. 2012 rubbish but fairly good family story.
Now Moonfall. To many this is just another Emmerich outlandish sci film. True you dont take a graffiti clad old Shuttle in storage and have it ready in hours to launch to Moon. Other scenes dont add up.
But when you add the brilliant actor Bradley from Game Of Thrones, Patrick Wilson from the Red Door and other horror films aided by Halle Berry it just works. The Megastructure man is clever than most noticing Moons orbit is decaying..hes slightly loopy and suffers from IBS!
Lets just remind ourselves about the theory of megastructures. this is not a new science as such. its been heavily documented and talked about for years. In fact Star Trek generations commited a whole program of the Dyson Sphere in a episode including Scottie from the original Star Trek.
The synopsis is a megastructure based on mechanical design built round a star to collect its energy to support megastructures like our moon.
So then we have a crew doing some research and maintenance out there, and a huge cluster of bits form a snake like thing that attacks the Shuttle. this is an ancient AI race of aliens that actually was born from earths history. ...
ok so fast foreword the snake like mass descends on the moon and starts drilling itself into the moons surface. that's about the end for now, until video captured shows what happened aboard the ship, they get home but Patrick Wilson is held responsible for the loss of astronaut.
What we see is an AI intelligence upsetting the moons gravitational pull and the start of a decaying orbit. Nasa pulls up an old shuttle and more in hope launches it to investigate the anomaly, backed up with the megastructure guy Wilson and Berry.
Effects in this is quite well done, certainly up to Emmerichs standard, it gets complicated when they have to launch another smaller ship to
enter the hole left by the AI drilling thing. inside the moon they find exactly what they expected a dyson sphere type of structure powered by a small star. Boffins decide to have given them a suspended project, a Magnetic pulse weapon.
they get chased inside the moon until an unknown force takes them over and lands them in a part of the moon that the AI entity cant get past. there they meet ancestors, who made many earths many years ago, and AI was the thing that made it all possible, but it tells the AI went rogue, broke out of its confines and attacked the ones who built it.
i not go into details, but the resulting cooperation leads in the end of the destruction of the AI snake, by Bradley by using the EMP device but loses his real life, later hes reinvented in digital form, even seeing his mother and cat again, he has no idea if hes alive or dead, but hes charged by the moons inhabited computer to repair the moon and send it back to where it should be. I found most of the film informative, scary about AI, thought about Dyson Sphere technology, and more, but slightly put off by "Not possible" scenes and crazy untried tech. but liked the general premiss of our AI coming back to haunt us. "No Freaking Way" makes me laugh. I have seen this film several times still keeps me entertained, even as US government seems intent on nuking said moon!!!!
