First of all, I'm a die-hard F.R.I.E.N.D.S. fan. I have watched the whole series over 5 times already and am planning for the sixth.
To say in few words: the show was good for the better half. There were many things that I liked and disliked and here is a comprehensive list below:
Likes:- 1) A lot of unreleased footage/BTS footage was released and it was thoroughly enjoyable.
2) We got to look at the whole set from a completely different perspective which revealed the cameras, light stage above and the place where the audience was sitting.
3)We for the first time had these interview-style moments of the three producers Bright, Kauffmann and Crane which were again novel and enjoyable. It was refreshing to hear their side of the story of how they came up with the show, how the characters were inspired by the people in their lives, how did they cast the actors and the whole lot.
4) The fans from all over the countries shared their perspectives and their relationship with this show. This also destroyed the irresponsible notion that you need people of colour/LGBTQ characters for that audience to relate with the show(not that they shouldn't be casted).
It also showed who F.R.I.E.N.D.S. helped them overcome a rough time in their lives, which I could also relate to. To see this was a big relief.
5)The editing was done nicely and even the old footage had a good quality, which is under-appreciated.
Dislikes - 1) I had the obvious expectation of Paul Rudd and Cole/Dylan Sprouse showing up. That was a big bummer.
2) They added David Beckham, Reese Witherspoon, BTS, Malala, Justin Bieber, Cara Delevingne, Lady Gaga. It seemed kind of pointless as I was more interested in the cast and crew experiences. The star addition could've looked good if the quantity was less, to be honest.
3) Their reaction were a bit too cheesy at the start, though this all slowly seeped into my heart and I cried at the end, that still doesn't change the obvious elephant.
4)WHY JAMES GORDEN?? He was literally cringy, extra and did not fit well, it did not work.
5)Some of the cameos by the secondary cast were the most inauthentic, cheesy lines which were heavily generic and bland.
6)Matthew Perry spoke some to almost nothing. I love that guy and his contribution would've been really appreciated even more. Even a small thing like that he would be in constant anxiety throughout the taping for audiences laughs, that was very little said but revealed a lot. But of course, you could not tread more into that territory without talking about his addiction which I think would have been a nice thing to discuss as right now is mental health awareness month.
7)David Schwimmer was awkward for the ENTIRE duration of the show which was also again, very obvious.
8)Every individual 6 members' opinions and memories just like the producers would have worked great but they DID NOT DO THAT.
9)They also forgot a lot of iconic scenes like Bamboozled, unagi, Ross' sandwich, etc. If they did all the recreation of scenes might as well have eliminated the concept of James Gordon ALL-TOGETHER AND SHOULD HAVE used the time in personal interviews/opinions and recalling even more scenes.
*Final Verdict:- The reunion was unevenly meta, good and watchable but had a lot of room for improvement, they focused on pumping up the audience by bringing stars that were not that needed and missed out on Paul and Cole/Dylan which was a biggie. Some parts like the producers' interviews were really gold see to see.
In the end, when I saw Matthew Perry almost crying, I got emotional too and genuinely felt that.
