I think the direction of the film was different. This isn't a formula driven true crime documentary. It's a different way to tell the story of the progression of a killer. That being said, here is my review:
I have to agree with other reviewers that this could have been an hour or two versus 3 hours in length. They could have cut all shots of the videos that were uploaded and still made an impact. They could have focused more on the human victim and how the self prescribed rule zero played into finding out who this psychopath was and the consequent internet hunt and man hunt to track him down. They did a good job of showcasing players in the storyline, but I would have like to see more of the detective work rather than someone seriously clicking through every single street in Montreal looking for a stone staircase, rather than simply doing a Google Search.
I also would have liked to see more of a wrap up of some of the story arcs, the red herring of Manny fell flat, were those extra hands on the python edited in as his own to further this concocted alibi? What about the police report in South Beach? Where did all the money come from? He was a part time escort....um. More questions than answers.
But mostly I wanted to see more of Jun Lin and his family. Who was he? The human loss aspect was lost in the "hunt" and the "game" of the film and that is sad because this man was murdered. He had dreams, aspirations, was innocent, and deserves his story to be told too. The absolutely most compelling part of the entire film is seeing that detective in Montreal break down over the loss of life. All life is precious. And his best friend telling the viewers exactly what others have said, his friend is lost in this story and he shouldn't be.
To the film makers I would like to say that the public shaming in the ending was completely unnecessary. Nobody controls another person's actions. Not this FB group, not the mother, not the mysterious red herring of Manny, or any other media. And instead of educating the viewers, you choose to end your story by shaming those that watched it. Poor choice in my opinion.
