Fans of the book may be frustrated but taken on its own terms this is John Ford at his best, beautifully observed, sincere, masterful but never pretentious. Helen Hayes made too few films by her own choice, and thank goodness we have those few. Apart from her own mastery the great little lady was surprisingly sexy. Colman: one of the very greatest film stars, dashing in silents and then - then! - even better with his uniquely cultivated yet warm and welcoming voice. What a career. What a terrific film.

Gwe W is a reviewer after my own heart. My wife pokes fun at me, but I always hoped Charlie wound up with the flower girl in City Lights. In reality, she married and quickly divorced Cary Grant. Should have stayed with Charlie.
Shirley and Mitch are great, though Annie Bancroft and Henry Fonda must have been too.

Nothing rankles more than to hear a famous author’s early work called immature. Who are we to say. But, forgive me, this plot is positively infantile. It reminds me of the Marx Brothers movie where they deduce that a forged painting was the work of “a left-handed moth.” Nevertheless, Agatha’s young sleuths are charming. No wonder she and they grew old together.
