ENCOURAGES AMERICAN ETHNOCENTRISM
The parts of the show that I saw were physically cringy to watch. While the show had its humorous moments and included beautiful scenery of Paris, it was clearly American directed and portrayed a VERY stereotypical French culture. The American ethnocentrism was unreal in this show. The main characters complete disregard and disrespect towards the French culture was hard to watch. She refused to educate herself on the culture and only participated in parts of it that she liked; such as eating pastries at a café or drinking wine with her meal.
The American ethnocentrism on behalf of the writers was disgusting and disappointing. Instead of taking an amazing opportunity to demonstrate to Americans how they should educate themselves on others cultures and act appropriately when in a foreign place, the writers decided to encourage American behavior in foreign places and made it seem okay when in reality it is not and looks bad on behalf of our country. (It is also why people like the French HATE Americans.)
The main character was also a very stereotypical American but she never really seemed to do anything wrong in the show as they made the French characters adapt to her instead of the other way around. Her wardrobe was horrible, it looked like something from the 2000s that middle schoolers would wear (even at the formal events!!), and it was an eyesore to look at next to the beautiful Parisian architecture around her.
The show was humorous at times but that was about the only thing it had going for it.
Would not recommend this show, although i’m sure your average american would love it.
-For anyone wondering.. no, I’m not French, I’m just a very well traveled and educated American individual with a college education in International Studies.
