I didn't dislike the show. In fact, I found it interesting, however, I'm shocked to Google it and not see a ton of backlash against it... especially in today's society.
I will say it felt like the production crew was highlighting the most awkward and uncomfortable moments in these people's lives, and if I'm going to be honest, such editing/directing/etc. really portrayed these young people in a negative light. It felt as if we, the audience, are meant to be laughing at them and not with them. The first episode or 2 I strongly got that vibe and found the cast to be rather annoying. Thankfully, I persisted past the first 2 episodes and as you get to know the people featured a little more, my attitudes completely changed.
My concern is that many people will give the show a chance, see the first episode for what it is (awkward, off-putting, condescending, and exploitative), cease watching the show, and thus further the un-said attitude of society: separate but equal.
Perhaps that is just how I felt while watching this show, but I'd be curious to know what other people actually think about it.
Just remember these are real people who are not "acting," and if I were to tell one of them the show made me feel as if I was at a zoo gawking at the animals for entertainment... I bet the cast, or at least their caregivers, might pause and think: "Is it really a good idea to put my child through this?" Damage can't be un-done, so best to try to prevent as much as we can; I'm not convinced the creators of this show had the best intentions in mind.
