They clearly went out of touch with the characters we got so familiar with in the first game.
SPOILERS FROM HERE ON OUT
Joel would never walk into such a trap. The Joel I know would have seen this coming from a mile away. If you wish to kill the character, go ahead. That is not my problem. Nor is playing a female character, because I promise I like Ellie too. I understand that the writers needed/wanted to kill Joel. But this was executed horrendously. Walking into a trap that he would sniff out from a mile away, going out with a whimper, and ultimately for nothing, because the end of the story doesn't even wrap up. It's the same thing the Star Wars franchise did to Luke Skywalker, and the fact that I have to witness that happen once again to my most beloved characters is disappointing and upsetting.
We are also forced to play as a character we hate for a significant amount of time in-game. They did this completely backwards, and I'm glad I didn't buy this game. I know Naughty Dog will either delete this review or call everyone who dislikes this game a misogynistic pig but hear my words now. If you can't create a story that is satisfying and captivating, you should not be writing stories. This is neither and completely throws out all character development and character tendencies to shoehorn in a rough skeleton of a story. To me, this game was a bad fanfiction and the story ended at the end of the masterfully crafted first game.
