During the OYSTER episode Alton declared that PEARLS do not grow inside OYSTERS but rather, grow in MUSSELS.
Sorry but I beg to differ................................
MUSSELS rarely produce a pearl. The mussels that produce pearls are fresh water. The value of fresh water pearls is significantly lower than Salt water oyster pearls. HOW IT'S DONE: The oyster receives a granule of sand as an irritant and the nacre produced by the oyster "will a pearl make".
By-the-way, Japanese pearl divers harvest OYSTERS not MUSSELS. Check the internet for clarification if you doubt my knowledge.
I watch most of Alton Brown's shows and learn related cooking sciences & physics.
Personally, I would prefer eliminating the comedy & associated interactions - the fish monger - butcher - the Chinese utensil store & the characters related to the time period of the recipe. These all detract from the show.
Thank you.
