The story does not follow the book. In the book, as soon as Tiuri gets the letter he cannot look back and his grand adventure begins. That is essential to his development. In the show, he goes and talks to his father, which would have ended up in his demise in the book. There is also no magic in the book, it is very human which adds to its richness and rawness. Very poor choice of artistic freedoms on this show.
