Watched "Old" Last night. I'll be honest, I am still processing it. There is a lot to like here but I found the ending somewhat disatisfying. Not so much from how it ended as this desire by MKS to always have a twist. I just didn't like the execution of the twist. The twist itself was not inherently bad, but it was just kind of there.
In MKS's earlier works, the twist just seemed more hidden but integrated and therefore deserving of praise. The genius was that after the twist is revealed, you felt like you were just beyond getting it before the reveal. Not due to a lack of information but more like it was hidden in plain sight with clues along the way. Afterward, you were like... the signs were all there but I just missed figuring it out before the reveal. I can go back and watch the movie again with new eyes. I didn't get that here... it was more like... "and here you go... the twist you have been waiting for. It makes the third act feel sloppy.
Also, the hook of the mysterious aging is discussed but not really explained. So it feels expository rather than integral to the world. But I still enjoyed that execution of this film , so many concepts about the effects of aging and of family dynamics are woven in here. Ultimately, there were strong performances, neat plot devices and some legit horror elements that deserve praise.
It was not a bad film, if you are a fan of MKS, you could do worse than watching this and you are likely to enjoy it. On the other hand, there were some missed chances for greatness so the rest of us, well, our mileage may vary. I give it a 2.5, plus. a.5 for delivering a good enough movie under difficult tropical and pandemic circumstances. So 3 out of 5.
Now get off my lawn.
