Some say arch; some say melodramatic. But it was a time of melodrama, of extremes, of intrigue, of horrors unimaginable. Much was known but so much unknown at this time. For audiences today, so distanced from that time and place, the exposition is educational and enlightening. And even to those in the day it would have been revealing in its lengthy dialogues and moral stance. It was before this a stage play, wherein dialogue and exposition are the norm. It is worth watching in that it demonstrates how humans have not changed through the centuries. Morals and values have cycled, but human behavior, wants, and needs have not. Worth watching for how much has NOT changed, particularly in today's climate, 2024.
