Some of these reviewers are taking this movie way too seriously. It's not a cultural digest of Asian (of which, many were represented here) traditions. It is not a serious story. It is a rom com at its core. That said...
I found the film to be a nice refreshing touch from the cliched Asian tropes that we see sprinkled into Hollywood productions here and there. The core prevalent challenges of collectivistic cultures (Asian) and individualistic (American) are seen here where they clash when she meets the mother.
The mother's views of the American girl are pretty accurate regardless of socioeconomic status. Asian parents tend to view Asian Americans as too out of touch with the cultural values to be good life partners. They don't understand the work, the value and the challenges that come with working together and emphasizing the household rather than the individual. This is very explicitly shown when the mother literally says it. Since this isn't a movie about cultural values, but rather a rom com of a bicultural relationship, I think this is an acceptable way to present the culture. If you want something deeper, try actually looking at productions outside of Hollywood. I promise you...you will not be disappointed.
Overall, the emotions, the challenges and the story presented are relatable and well scripted. I think by rom com standards, this is a stand out.
