If I had hadn’t seen the 1961 version, I would have considered this a great movie — and never watched it again, unlike the 1961 original, which I have re-watched at least once each decade for the last 50 years. Perhaps it was because I was 13 when I watched it the first time or because, in Spielberg’s attempt to update and inject more realism into this remake, he sacrificed some of the pacing and pathos that grabbed me by the throat 50 years ago and never let go.
