An unbiased and honest review in a word: It’s a ‘fine’ movie and a great attempt. Technically, in terms of visuals, art, dialogues and lead acting it’s a brilliant movie. As a kannadiga myself, i’m extremely proud and happy with the team’s efforts and final result. But in terms of plot, the director has attempted a linear approach which makes it feel as a drag in parts. The identity of the protagonist is not kept a secret unlike ugramm( the director’s previous hit), so the story doesn’t exactly leave you with the impact n feel of Ugramm, although the team leaves no stone unturned to make that a reality and succeeds for most of their ambitious attempt too. Since it is a linear story line, you mostly get to know the exact story within around an hour, so the story may not feel as gripping as the director’s previous hit. To sum it up, the story in the movie is not about engaging questions like ‘what’ or ‘why’, because these questions are answered clearly at a very early stage in the movie. Rather it is about the ‘how’ which is brilliantly presented on visual grounds.
A possible reason behind the director’s choice to narrate the story in the linear approach, is to film the first half of the movie. The movie until interval has been mostly filmed to just introduce the protagonist and to cater to the fans of the leading actor with much hype around his character. For the neutral audience, this might feel over the top and will get to their nerves at some point if they don’t connect with the leading actor or are unaware of his regional career graph. All the possible grievance that audience might have with the first half of the movie is compensated with a beautifully made second half. Infact, it is the second half of the film, that the director’s actual efforts are witnessed in terms of plot, camera work and direction.
The director has opted to include a few sequences from the sequel non-linearly in the narration to tease the audience.
Overall it’s an 8/10. Could have easily been a movie above 9 points.. if the director had fearlessly adopted the non linear approach that he had previously used in Ugramm, to the entire narration of the KGF plot; as it would better suit the story of KGF in terms of suspense, interest and grip.
