Perhaps I like it better than previous reviews because I’ve been waiting for a remake of The Stand for the last few years. I was curious to see how the writers would factor in the internet and social media, conspiracy theories and paranoia that comes from hiding behind a computer screen. I wanted to see the change, the variations of what a new century, new ideas and the advanced technology, would do when given the chance to adapt such an incredible story to the screen. I should mention The Stand is one of my favorite novels and I’ve read the 1000+ page book multiple times.
If you can cope with the fact that they took a book that was written in 1978 and adapted it to be relevant in 2021 (quite perfectly since we’re living through a pandemic), then you’ll find it’s quite decent. Until you’re used to how they decided to shoot the series, it would probably be easier to follow if you’ve never read the book. And, yes, at three episodes in, there are a few deviations, but there are always changes when it goes from print to screen.
It’s not 1978, it’s 2021. Enjoy a show about a pandemic while you’re living through one. It’s never going to be more relatable than it is now.
