This Undercover High show is not exactly something that drew me in past Season 1 Episode 2. I didn't feel it was authentic enough, and I just wasn't feeling anything at all. I suppose I was anticipating being able to relate to this show, but it just seemed too staged and lacked an inspiration-factor.
Undercover High doesn't reveal how truly torture-some high school can be for young people getting bullied or going through legitimate crisis. Maybe that wasn't the point though? I'm not sure I get the point. I just know I didn't like this show.
I also cringe when the "undercover" student who was aware of people group-texting about raping her, was eerily calm, cool and collected. A sincere response to a young female getting rape threats I realize is a tall order for a show taking place in a high school (age, ethics, morality, legality, etc.) but it makes me wonder if the "rape text" was real or staged.
Another sad moment in the documentary is that the students were group texting about the rape and also talking about smoking cannabis and they made a point to call it "drugs" with evil undertones in their tone of voice, and insinuated that cannabis is linked to the evil rape threat. That's pure anti-cannabis propaganda. Listen folks, cannabis is a gift, please stop perpetuating myths about cannabis. Cannabis literally saved my life in high school.
On a personal note, my high school experience was incredibly difficult for me. I was bullied badly and I bullied a little. (Hurt people, hurt people.) I feared for my safety many times. This show, well, I just couldn't relate.
I hope our school systems can adapt to the changes of the world we've had in the past 20 years and redo the way school systems are run. We need to empower education in the US, the way we empower the military. We need more kind, caring, and entrepreneurial teachers, with schools offering plenty of opportunities for young people with varied learning styles and preferences.
