As a huge fan of the 70s glam and punk fashion and music, this movie was phenomenal. The costume design definitely deserves an award, everything about the visuals is very beautiful and nice to see. But first of all from a punk perspective, punk was a subculture and a revolution, not a fashion trend so I didn't really enjoy "the future" written on Cruella's face since it's gotten from a well known punk anthem( for those who don't know : God save the Queen by Sex Pistols). Now from a viewer's perspective, I believe Cruella is just a more fashionable version of Joker, with the difference that at least we saw the struggles Joker(Arthur Fleck) was facing and at least could feel his motives for becoming a villain, we felt him and some even sympathised with him. But the same thing didn't happen in Cruella, it just feels incomplete, again, the opposite of another villain like Maleficent who we got to understand that she had been backstabbed and betrayed and at last she still had the goodness in her and was no longer a villain. Also comparing to Cruellashe lived in a phantasy world in which dead could be brought back to life, but in Cruella it's the real world and dead dogs can't be resurrected. So the fact that nobody can really connect to her personality makes it challenging... personally my only favourite character from the movie was Artie since he resembled a David Bowie fan and fashion designer of the 70s much better than Cruella resembled a punk or a villain. Another thing that bothered me was Cruella changing into Estella, now I really admire Emma Stone's work, very fascinating, but the switchins just feel unnecessary.
So I think this movie is an absolutely amazing fashion fest but critically, it doesn't have much to it.
