I hate criticizing actors because I know they are just doing their job. But the acting of the First family is pretty cringeworthy. I feel though that the fault may lie more in the writing or direction. The characters are so over the top it would be hard for anyone to make work. I think the supporting cast are the real stars of the show since their acting seems to be much better than the leads, specifically Taja V. Simpson. She's great!
I like Tyler Perry as an actor, a person, and for employing so many people of color but he has no sublty, tact or realism in addressing societal issues such as spousal abuse, addiction, body image, infidelity or homophobia. He goes WAY too far to the point that his work is hard to watch. Having main characters in his films and shows, who we are supposed to want to watch and be entertained by on some level say and do reprehensible things, like a man put down his overweight wife by comparing her to the cow that jumped over the moon, a mother saying she wish she had aborted her homosexual son or on this show the first interracial first couple portrayed on TV beating eachother within an inch of their lives before the inauguration is distasteful. If he wants to address these issues, he should do it in a proper, serious, more realistic manor that educates the audience instead of using them for shock value. If he could tone down the blunt over-the-top manor and distasteful words and actions of his antagonists I would be his biggest fan.
