I feel like it's been so long a time since I read such a fulfilling book. And I, unwittingly, found another book based on books. This book is not just another historical fiction set in the late 1930s. It tells the story of how a library came into being, it tells a story of how hard it was for the prevailing patriarchal society to let their women read, it is a story of 5 girls living in that society, yet so different from all, and what hardships they had to endure for being so, how all good deeds were kept aside by the society in the face of a prejudiced view.
.
This book does not contain just a fictionalized version of a story. This book- is a series of events, a lesson for us all us women of what our ancestors endured to get us where we are. It is not only a story of books and reading and libraries. It discusses several other prevailing issues which, no matter the time period, the development, are still relevant in the current times.
And beneath that all,it describes so well the emotions of the characters, their personal life and its problems.
.
Another good point in the book is its setting. The landscape is so mesmerizing, so well-defined that you can feel the summer heat, the autumn scenery, the impenetrable snow and the flooding creek. The book is as beautiful to read as it is enlightening.
