Ignore the critics on this one because it has nothing to do with politics! Ron Howard did an excellent job of keeping it real with this movie. He captured perfectly what it is like to grow up in a house with a parent who has a substance abuse issue while accurately depicting the fallout, guilt, and anger that resonates with a child for the rest of their life. Having lived it, this movie is undeniably about the children who struggle with the emotional difficulties of chaos and fear throughout their childhood. Then escaping the chaos only to be drawn back in again over and over and over because "they are still family" and you still love them. Some kids make it through and manage to escape the drama and chaos to become functional adults while others are doomed to repeat the actions of the addicted parent. Such a great movie and another win for Ron Howard!!!
