This is a movie that really should be seen on the big screen. I was lucky enough to see it on a big screen in the 80’s and was blown away by it. I had already seen Days of Heaven, so I couldn’t wait to see Badlands.
I have watched it several times through the years and in my view, it’s still a masterpiece. It’s the simplicity of it that I love and that it’s filmed on film. I read that someone didn’t like the fact that the director didn’t give us, the audience more information on Sissy Spacek’s character and Martin Sheen. I guess he needed everything explained to him. Personally, I saw no need for it. The movie was in “ the present”. I don’t think the person reviewing the film on this post understood where Malick was coming from.
I liked that the two characters show lack of emotion. Most sociopaths do.
I just love Malick’s keen sense of America’s vastness and his appreciation for its beauty. He is able to let us see it even though we follow two teenagers on a murder spree. Quite brilliant.
