I'm really trying to understand why this awful show is so popular. I was disappointed in it, as the prospect of a show about what goes on in a female prison is so captivating, but it was terribly executed. The acting feels emotionless and off-puttingly fake, and the dialogue is extremely unrealistic. The writers put a bad punch line at the end of everyone's sentences and it's cringeworthy. It feels like I'm watching a show that's meant to be light and funny for kids, but the topic is too serious to be made light of. I wish this show were more realistic and had actors who, well, knew how to actually express emotions. Also, I'm only on season one, but I'm noticing so much racism. For example, all the black female characters are portrayed as stereotypically aggressive and "sassy". It seems like only the white characters have individuality. And it was baffling to me, how the guard called the short-haired black girl a monkey. It was so unfunny that it was plain racist. And don't even get me started on the blatant transphobia. Okay sure, they included a trans character in the show. Yay, inclusivity! BUt at what cost? All the characters in the show made disgusting transphobic remarks toward her and treated her horribly. Is this really the message we want to put out there about trans women?
I wish I liked this show but it's plain awful
