While not Shakespeare's best work, Pericles represents a shift in perspectives, and the Bard trying something relatively new in his day and age. Pericles is an awful read. It really is not the best play to read, but the thing plays beautifully on the stage. Find a production to watch and read along if you need to. The thing is heart-wrenching at times and punchy and funny in Shakespeare's special way in others. The BBC does an excellent production.
