My family is planing on seeing this next week. My expectations are low, based on trailer first impressions. In short, the thing takes itself too seriously. Almost two hours of this stuff? The source material is myth/fairy-tale of the "Hercules" or "Gilgamesh" variety. But everything I see from the trailer suggests this movies goes out of its way to "modernize" the story in a way that falls flat for me. I'm stacking it up against a beloved traditional cell animation version from 1979, which is probably unfair. Its unlikely the filmmaker's objective is to compete with childhood nostalgia. So I'm going to try my best to turn part of my brain off and watch it as just another action flick. But even that will be hard as the character design and cinematic aesthetics doesn't really appeal to me. Maybe I'll edit this later for an "after" review.
