to be clear, I watched this movie as 2 parts on Netflix. It's just under 4 hours total. So I didn't se the director's cut. Anyway, there is a lot I can say about this movie. It's very hard to watch. As absurd as it is, there are so many moments and themes that hit home super hard for me. The scene where Joe's father is dying in the hospital is one of the saddest scenes I've ever seen in film. The conversations between Joe and Seligman are priceless. They had about 90 pages of dialogue in between both of them so they said it was a little challenging to film. but they pulled it off. This movie is about a sex addict and it definitely doesn't hold back. von Trier really hit home with this one. If you like von Trier, euro arthouse cinema, or melodramas, I recommend this movie to you. I really liked it.

I just saw this on the big screen, it was such a mindblowing experience. The documentary did not just cover the climb, but focused just as much on the toll extreme sports can have on a family of an athlete. The documentary explored Alex's personal convictions behind free solo climbing and how he has used his craft to deal with his internal trauma and demons. This is much more than a documentary about a guy climbing a mountain. Everyone involved in this was very passionate, and I feel that was perfectly conveyed. The cinematography is also one of a kind for a documentary. I have only seen one or two documentaries that I would consider just as meaningful and emotional as Free Solo.
