I wanted to love this movie, we’re a family of huge Disney/Pixar fans so when I say I was disappointed, offended really, at this awful movie, I say so with a heavy heart. Don’t believe the stellar reviews (super sketchy btw) from the woke media, don’t believe those who call us just “overprotective parents”, religious, right wing or conservatives nuts, I suspect we’re most fairly liberal urbanite parents who saw right through the inappropriateness of this movie.
The religious right wingers are not watching Disney movies with their kids ok?
A lot has been said about why Turning Red irked parents, teens, preteens, and kids all over the world . I mean, give it up to Disney for managing to unite so many different demographics, cultures and age groups in disliking a movie so much. It’s quite a feat.
For my family, this had nothing to do with the menstruation topic, my boy and girl are quite comfortable with all things period, it’s an absolute nonissue in our household. Exploring teenage sexuality is just plain awkward in an animated movie though, come on man. I remember being an older teenager and wanting to be swallowed up by the couch whenever a scene touched upon sexual content and my parents were around. It is awkward. The kids don’t like it and neither do parents. There are boundaries and they’re there for a reason. But by and large the biggest issue I took with this movie, and my kids as well btw, is the constant undermining of parents, this vilification of mother and father figures. The message here was choose friends over family, I mean, seriously??? This is not ok and it will never be ok. Look, if there are people out there who grew up in fucked up situations and their families were unreliable, abusive, I’m sorry for you and what you went through but we don’t need to make a Disney movie about it alright. We can make grown up movies about it that go on to win Oscars and R ratings and you can enjoy it over a tub of ice cream, or wine and have a good ugly cry. It’s better that way, trust me. Disney if you’re listening stop barking up the wrong tree, we’re literally THE adults paying for the damn plus subscription
