I remember watching the trailers for Rocketman. I was stoked. I saw it. Then I had to rewatch different parts of the film, and it was all so... disappointing. Sure Taron actually sings the songs. Sure, the film is more bio than pic compared to, say, Bohemian Rhapsody. Sure, it tries to do something unique by throwing in Musicals in a GRIM FILM that's SUPPOSED to transition from melancholy to hopeful, but it just doesn't deliver as a film. I nearly fell asleep with the countless fluctuations in tone and theme. What is the theme? Quest for self. Which is pretty much the only plot in the entire film, and it constitutes maybe 25% of the film the rest is just pointless musicals that either play no part to that point in the film, OR they're completely out of place in the film. At one point, Elton gets married to some girl. I DON'T EVEN REMEMBER HER NAME AND I JUST REWATCHED THE FILM YESTERDAY. They're married for 5 minutes, then they divorce. WHAT WAS THE POINT OF THEIR MARRIAGE?! WHY SHOULD I CARE ELTON WAS MARRIED TO HER? HOW DOES THIS FURTHER THE IMAGE YOU'RE TRYING TO PORTRAY?! They barely even mention it afterwards too. No one feels like they want to even be in this film, except Taron, who nails his performance. There are these sudden transitions that are barely explained and really don't help me relate to Elton's journey. His mother shows up a lot, and the conflict between Elton and his mother is just about the only half decent plot.
I get it that people like this film (for the wrong reasons in all honesty). I just don't see how this film could ever exceed a 3/10, if that. Just because something is done differently from the status quo doesn't make it good, much less fantastic.
