Great acting (except the main actor, who barely registers). Amy Adams and Glenn Close are both terrific. The movie mostly leaves aside the political sermons of the book, which, while well written, I found to be an obnoxious “humblebrag” overall and overly simplistic in its depiction of the region specifically and poverty in general. I followed watching this by watching “Hillbilly,” which I’m sure some might find to be pushing an overly progressive agenda but I found much more humane and illuminating than Elegy if you want a better view of modern Appalachia.
So it’s an ok watch. Not the best, not the worst but might interest you to learn more about the region and that is a good thing!
