the reviews i've seen for this game paint everything in a ridiculous negative light, it seems that people would rather have Mary sues as protagonists than have a story that actually represents humanity. if you want a good albeit sad story this game is a masterclass. spoilers ahead. Joel is killed off early in the game, a lot of people have painted this to be a spit in the face of the fans of the first game but that's not what it is at all, Joel did a lot of things that earned him death, we played through the massacre of an entire group of people who were trying to cure the zombie infection because Joel wanted to keep Ellie alive, those kind of actions have consequences. i don't think Joel deserved to die the way he did, everything he did in the first game was to protect himself and the people he cares about but because of the state of the world they're in protecting your people requires that you hurt others, so while he only did what he felt he had to do the revenge quest against him was also justified. a lot of people have complained about the lgbt representation in the game, they try to suggest that it's being shoved in your face but really it's not that big a deal, there are plenty of straight relationships depicted in the game and Abby isn't trans, she's just strong. one thing i saw people get mad about was that Ellie didn't finish her revenge quest, she got so close to finishing the job before she turned away from it, these people missed the entire message of the game, the story is about what revenge and "justice" leads to, the suffering it causes. Joel is a victim of revenge, Ellie is a victim of their revenge on Joel, and everything Ellie does in her effort to get justice for Joel hurts everyone around her and herself, by the end of the game she loses everything she had because of her need for revenge and the fact that she didn't kill Abby doesn't even matter anymore, she did the right thing in the very end but not until after she pushed everyone away and ruined her own life. "The guardian (Ellie's song)" by Shawn James, written specifically for this game says it best "justice and mercy don't live side by side" and the entire game is a perfect example as to why mercy is the greater of the two.
