Growing up watching the original Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron being my favorite movie, i was a little hesitant to see they were reimagining the movie. And to no surprise and complete disappointment, they absolutely BUTCHERED this movie. If you browse on Netflix, you may have seen the series they decided to release about a child taming Spirit. If the creators had spent even an ounce of their time watching the original, they would know that the movie is supposed to capture an untamed soul (being Spirit). The original storyline is to directly emphasize white colonizers and their abuse to Native Americans. The original story is a reflection of real events that happened in the US. When the colonizers came to North America and tried to tame wild horses and “civilize” the native people, the original Spirit was somewhat of a way to recognize the beauty in an untamed soul and a free spirit and the cruel ness of white colonizers. The new movie has just done exactly what white people have done and that is, completely whitewashing the movie and slandering the beauty of it. Placing not only a child as the protagonist is giving complete disregard to the connection between wildlife and native Americans. The whole point of the original movie was to show the connection, metaphorically, between native peoples and spirits. The beauty of it was the voices of the wild that cannot be heard, but understood by the Native Americans. The new movie completely obliterates the message of the original movie.
