I want to preface this entire review by saying that I am a comic book fan so the lens I view all of the MCU movies through is one of a true nerd. Captain Marvel serves its purpose and earns its place within the MCU. It is an origin story that we will need going forward. Remember that these characters and stories are not just individual movies in themselves but are pieces of a collective and I believe must be viewed as parts of the whole and not individually.
I will start by saying that I LOVED Ben Mendelsohn as Talos. His performance steals the whole movie. He was funny and creepy at the same time. The Skrulls are one of my favorite villains in Marvel and they hit the nail on the head portraying them in this film. Annette Benning as the Supreme Intelligence/Mar Vel was a great choice as well. I found myself wanting a lot more of her and that character. Jude Law also nails Yon-Rogg. I wasn’t impressed by Brie Larson and at times she took me out of the movie but it’s something I can live with for sure. She is definitely not as bad as some of the reviews I have read.
I go to Marvel movies because I want to see the characters I read as a child come alive and I want to be transported back to that feeling I had when I was a child again. Captain Marvel did that in spades. Being set in the 90s set the stage for a great soundtrack.
Having said that there were a few holes in timelines that didn’t make sense but as a whole Captain Marvel is a solid 3 out of 5 movie.
