I am appalled by the negative criticisms! The pattern of these critics is that they’ve never been in an DV relationship and specifically not one that dealt with substance abuse and it’s the exact reason they don’t get it and are quick to judge. I have. And I can’t tell you enough how spot on this film was. It was as if this film was made for me. Minus the swearing part, Alex reminded me of myself in almost every way! Maybe it’s hard for people to believe that people like Nate exists and also people who still have honesty, dignity and integrity like Alex, despite her life experiences, because they are speaking from their own negatively affected behaviors but I’m here to tell you, there are, but while not many, there are. If you are looking for a movie with a perfect story line like Twilight, then this isn’t for you. This movie is about real life events that happens everyday and a film that shines light on what it’s like to be with an alcoholic/abuser with very little to no support outside of your home with a child that depends on you. So if you’re looking for some fast, fantasy film or a film that is made to only satisfy your own needs then skip it. Other than that, this film brings awareness to DV and shows people why the cycle continues—lack of resources, support systemically and familial, money, and then the belief itself that the abuser has changed. I’ve never seen a film with so many exceptional actors! Also the metaphors were so intense and beautiful! I am a victim and I found the dark humor to be funny. Lots of crying and laughing throughout this series.
