I was in Japan during the Vietnam war. I met many men who were there on R&R and listened to their stories. I called the hospital where many wounded soldiers were. I offered to help, whether rolling bandages, writing letters for them or reading letters to them; helping however I could. The military station was asking for volunteers. I was turned down because I was not military. I was scheduled to entertain the troops in Vietnam, but had to wait in Thailand for a call telling me it was OK to come. When the call came, they said it was too dangerous. Martha Rae was shot at while boarding a helicopter, and a 4 or 5 piece band had been injured. Since that time, I have always been sad that I couldn't do something to help.
