Another perfect example of the mediocrity that plagues today’s movie industry. Even a strong performance from Denzel Washington can’t rescue a film with a story that’s severely lacking in several areas. Rami Malek was the wrong choice for this film. In Seven, Brad Pitt played opposite Morgan Freeman as a newly promoted hotheaded detective, while Freeman playing the older, wiser soon-to-be retired detective offered viewers a balance between the two characters and was an important element to what ultimately played out in the third act. Here we have a film that tries to do something similar, yet completely fails.
When a movie reveals a big twist and you don’t feel anything, you are left wondering why. Bad directing and/or a bad script are the usual suspects. This film suffers from both. The real question is whether or not I would suggest someone watch this movie, and my I find myself hesitant to recommend it and to recommend people stay away from it.
I am experiencing more intensity trying to decide whether or not to recommend this film, than I fell during the third act of the film itself. Because of that, I will recommend Denzel Washington fans should watch this movie, and those of you who aren’t big Denzel Washington fans should probably go spend two hours doing something else.
We’ve witnessed a major decline in filmmaking. When the artist cares more about politics than poetry chances are you are not going to enjoy or look forward to anything they have to offer.
