The most unique movie I have seen in a while, had me guessing over and over from; crazy girlfriend, to vengeful children and finally The Others look a like. Until finally the fatal revenge guided prank went too far and Grace's past intertwined with reality. As in most fairy tales, naughty children get what they deserve.
Veronika Franz & Severin Fiala's 'The Lodge' is something like Ari Aster's 'Hereditary' & 'Midsommar' mixed into a must see slow burn thriller. The feeling of inclosure within the lodge is helped by the visuals displayed by the doll house replicating the real life scenes. The lead performances from both children and adults are so realistic you'll forget that they're acting.
Grief creates monsters of us all, this is showcased in this film through the lenses of the 'naughty' children terrorising Grace. Blame and revenge fuel their misguided prank as they trap Grace in her own personal hell. Feeling like she has sinned.
Once they take her medication their terrible but harmless prank turns into a life or death situation for Grace as she tries to piece together what exactly is going on as the children play along with her, poker faces and all. Once Grace finds her dog frozen to death the children come clean, but she is too far gone to answer to reason as her past floods her mind, the door in her mind keeping these memories at bay swung wide open.
The final shot of Grace standing over the children holding a gun as they have sins written over their duck-taped mouths is the most real thing in the film. How underlying distress can boil up and turn us into our worst selves. The children get what they deserve and Grace finally becomes what she was destined to be.
