Just finished watching Deliver Us From Evil-(2020 Korean film) , a very engaging tale one that attempts to get as real as it can whilst yet maintaining the fabric of fictional reality. In a film dominated by psychopaths of various degrees, painting anyone with any moral obligation goes out of the window yet, the protagonist is intrinsically imbued with a modicum of morality and is stricken with a gust of hope, especially at a juncture in his life when he absolutely has no utility of hope. The film being designed as a high octane action thriller obviously delivers on that front to a large extent but what it also exhibits is the story writers carefully placed bread crumbs of hope placed all along the journey of the protagonist, thus it also gives us as an audience the chance to see the protagonist's frantic attempt and yearning for redemption as he keeps taking those bread crumbs desperately to have some meaning to his life. I might be exaggerating with the moral aspect of the film, perhaps eulogising too, to a certain extent.
The reality or the lack of it thereof is again beautifully done. Its been done before, it's been done almost neatly in here too, nothing of major importance.
Action choreography is as expected of korean gangster films. Although fight cinematography of Hong Kyung Po employs the ever so known jittery camera technique but its not bad. Infact the shaky camera work at least lets us see the punches land and the knives disembowel the participants, so yeah not bad but not good too.
The film boasts of a stellar pair of lead actors, especially the leads. This marks the reunion of hwang jung min and lee jung jae after new world (2013), another gem of a film. Apart from them no one was that significant.
In conclusion its a regular action flick and no more, doesn't intend to be preachy where violence is made commonplace and justifications for bloodshed are hardly essential.
