If this show did not involve a transgender central character it would have been, quite rightly, panned by the critics. It’s main currency is a series of childish, slapstick scenes coupled with “knob” jokes. Even the brilliant Fran Mills can’t save it.

A classic novel ruined by political correctness. Post-revolutionary France was not as multiracial as it is today nor as portrayed in this adaptation. It gives a false impression to a new generation by trying too hard to be politically correct. It’s far removed from Victor Hugo’s classic. Also, despite Alan Bradley and Dominic West, it has the feel of Oliver Twist about it. The younger members of the cast are very two dimensional. Very disappointing.
