I enjoyed reading about this period of time in history, both in the U.K. and in British Columbia but I felt that language should have been better edited. For instance, the terms "okay" and "for starters", to name only two, were off-putting. It would have been helpful to the author to have read the work of Susanna Moodie in order to learn language usage at that period of time.
