my oh my what a story, i was pleasantly surprised by the romantic touches (i dont know if everyone else was however), reminding me of 1984s but without the sex, each and every character felt so compelling and so real to me, what a beautiful painful world is depicted
the most important part of this book is its realism. the main character and many others characters have noticeable flaws and rash decisions, and the ending is so very realistic in my opinion. Lots of people have criticized it for its abruptness and pacing, but i think its just realism. a glimmer of color in a grey world, yet its often extinguished.
another aspect some people might not like but i really did was how it almost seemed like poetry at times, i dont think ive ever been in the mind of a novels main character as much as cristian florescu, and i have never sympathized with characters so much before.
No matter what, experience this book. In my estimation it is a very good representation and introduction to the lives of people during communist romania, lka;as elj;s' sa'; the characters are absolute perfection. if a movie doesnt count out for this i will riot, i feel this novel fits a movie wonderfully
