Mostly because it did not even get close to Mortal Kombat (1995). The dialogue was very weak. I'm also left feeling like I need to watch it again to understand the story even though the plot is fairly black and white.
Look maybe I'm biased but, I didn't enjoy having a brand new character as our protagonist either. The safe bet would have been to tell an origins story of one of the.....original characters.
