Seems like the comic book origins are only surface based as Kara in the comics is a lot more headstrong and not really one for sympathizing with humanity unlike her cousin Clark. Her not getting along with humanity on a moral level is one of many things that makes her stand apart from superman but the show basically just sidelined her real personality to make her a genderswaped superman.
