I don’t even understand Chinese but I am hooked to this show. Binge watched it in 3 days and now re-watching.
Every year or two there comes a drama that absolutely touches your heart. They all have very common elements that seem to resonate really well with a certain set of audience, especially women. And the Chinese drama directors have cracked this female estrogen/dopamine code so to say.
Male protagonists shown as the ideal man, one who cares so deeply about his love interest that he would go to any means to not just get her, but be there for her. This ideal man cooks, cleans, takes care of goons and is also rich, famous, not hardworking but somehow so good at what they do and confident that he excels at everything like literally everything from playing video games all the time to being the topper of his class also and running a super cool business to thrashing 15 thugs at a time while driving a Porsche. Phew! 😮💨
Ladies such men don’t exist in reality but who cares. San Yan is dedicated to the female lead for years even if he is not even on her mind. He secretly celebrates her birthdays and takes graduation pics etc etc just to keep her in his memories.
The most touching parts of the story is the sleepwalking episodes. You can feel the years of abuse coming out in these seemingly harmless sleepwalks where the female lead just wanders around , cries and goes back to sleep. While San Yan finds her sleepwalking and doesn’t try to wake her up but just hangs around, being her sun.
I really loved the slow burn romance , it isn’t a frustrating slow burn where the director has made it slow burn so that you bloody wait for 19 episodes before they finally kiss but you realise why the female lead is maintaining her distance from him… I. E just to protect him from all the trouble she goes through. Both of them love each other truly and don’t show it through action but rather inaction. He ignores her but makes sure she’s doing okay, she ignores him just to protect him.
The background music, cinematography, the restrained acting all adds to the drama. You feel the pain of the characters.
Very addictive. Although ladies you need to stop believing that being the victim and waiting for someone like San Yan to come save you is a real deal. That’s not what real life is … stand up for yourself and don’t wait for a knight in shining armor. Until then enjoy this mushy fantasy land drama that is oh sooo good
