I agree with all the positive reviews. (*Spoiler alert*) I hold back one star because this was an opportunity for people with an outsider's perspective to explain to Marcus what Alex could not explain. Marcus put Alex in a very vulnerable position with the deception. Even without explaining everything, he could've simply mentioned that the parents were not the best of parents. He needed to protect Alex from getting close to them.
Also, there was a sense of incompleteness in terms of not exploring the angle of extended family members who actually loved the boys. The boys were isolated from people who genuinely loved them, even denied presents and gifts. But when they were older, did they stay in touch with anyone?
Towards the end when Marcus still cannot understand his role in harming Alex and keeps seeming to almost blame Alex for breaking his own illusion, I felt the producers needed to offer professional intervention. Also, Marcus kept saying how this was the last time they would speak about it. Again, that should actually be the beginning of a dialogue. A healing dialogue. I felt the team needed to help Marcus see that he shouldn't close the door as soon as he opened it.
This is where I felt the production team let the brothers down. Other than that, brilliant documentary.
I did want to see others from the extended family offer their support.
