Take away the fact that the mother dies in episode 1 and you're left with a whole bunch of what. The children are all melodramatic yet unrealistic. A 12 year old who thinks she can handle illness on her own and as far as I can tell takes care of herself, a boy who allegedly was a great wrestler at his previous school is now a scrawny outcast who is "in love" with his gf who just never gets brought up again after he runs away to visit her because she didn't say "I love you" back fast enough (as his phone also happens to be dead) and the 16 year old who can flip on a dime for the most insensible reasons. Then there's dad who moves his kids across the country to apparently be fickle in his children's lives, doesn't even bother to take his youngest daughter to a doctor when she passes out and be a pushover because apparently that means you're getting in touch with your emotions and allowing you kids to as well. BUT WAIT why did they move? Why to be closer to good ol' aunt Charlie, the pseudo "mother figure" of sorts now yet still doing her own thing (not learning from the past, rushing into an engagement with a man who left her, I mean come on how many red flags did ya need?) that apparently matters so much they start setting up her story before you can even care about the immediate families characters. Sure it lacks cursing and nudity so it's great to sit down with the fam and watch, but that doesn't make it a good show.
