Finally, someone takes on the corrupt capitalist world of public guardianship!
Seriously though guardians get paid very little, do not have unfettered access to their ward's accounts (if they're caught embezzling they go to prison), it is extremely easy to legally contest a guardianship, and the decision making power a guardian has is limited. This movie was mildly entertaining, but given that if it gets a wide viewership it could create extremely negative views of a public welfare service, when pundits and politicians everywhere are already trying to discredit public welfare services as unnecessary, easily exploited, and over funded, this movie could do real damage. I get the idea that rampant capitalism is bad and people can exploit the system. But seriously, was there no better way to express that than through a system that is actually in place to help people, is very difficult to exploit, and that most people know very little about, meaning they'll be more likely to believe this is how it works?
Also after posting, I saw someone praised this movie for addressing guardian abuse. Two things: it is a rare occurrence that, while abhorrent, is usually by family members, not public guardians. Also, IT DOES NOT LOOK LIKE THIS! A serious look at elder abuse would be vastly different than this fantasy. Calling this a look at guardian abuse is like calling How to Train Your Dragon a movie about raising a puppy.
