This is a film that tries to tie the entire religious imagery of death and reincarnation across the whole of time and whilst trying not to offend. Let’s revisit the old idea of coming back from the dead to full full one’s thwarted destiny. The flaws in exploring this idea in Heaven can wait are repeated and frankly overly complicated...again.
There is a perfectly decent idea in here, perfectly played by Jamie Fox and Tina Fey utterly over complicated and almost obscured by a number of complex and poorly thought out plot cul de sacs. I watched it with my 8 year old. He couldn’t understand half the characters and most of the sub plots. I didn’t get it, either, so we watched it again and tried to stitch some logic into the ever more random ideas that increasingly pepper the film. Coco takes a similar idea and makes it work, Soul merely ties itself in knots.
