This stunning and meaningful novel is an icon, a pinnacle of science fiction. Silverberg is rightly a member of the Science Fiction Hall of Fame. The central figure is an Earthman, Gunderson, revisiting Holman's World after a decade or more away, where as a corporate administrator he oversaw the exploitation of the gentle, elephant-like native species known as the Nildoror. It is a journey of both apology and expiation wherein he finds transfiguration of his soul.

Creative workarounds for low budget constraints. Can't really be considered Lovecraftian, though there is an attempt to invoke "cosmic horror". The movie holds together well enough but there is a failure to engage the viewer in a real visceral sense. Horror fans who are well accomplished at suspending disbelief may find the movie engaging or even intriguing... in fact online there is real acclaim, and on one review aggregator site the rating is quite high. For this reviewer, who is both a science fiction and a Lovecraft fan, the rating would be two out of four stars.
